To ensure your Keurig coffee maker continues to brew great-tasting coffee and operates efficiently, regular cleaning is essential. The cleaning process involves a few key steps, from routine daily maintenance to a more thorough quarterly deep clean, also known as descaling.

The Importance of Cleaning and Descaling

Over time, mineral deposits from water—primarily calcium and lime—can build up inside the machine’s internal components. This buildup, known as “scale,” can slow the brewing process, affect water temperature, and even clog the machine entirely. Descaling is the process of removing this mineral buildup, which is crucial for the longevity and performance of your Keurig.

Step-by-Step Keurig Cleaning Guide

Part 1: Regular Maintenance (Weekly)

This routine cleaning focuses on the removable parts of the machine and the exterior.

  1. Unplug the Machine: For safety, always unplug the Keurig before you begin.
  2. Wash Removable Parts: Remove the water reservoir, lid, K-Cup pod holder, and drip tray. Wash these components in warm, soapy water. Use a soft cloth or sponge to gently scrub away any coffee residue or grime. Rinse them thoroughly and let them air dry completely to prevent lint particles from getting into the water reservoir.
  3. Clean the Needles: The sharp needles that puncture the K-Cup pod can get clogged with coffee grounds. Use a straightened paper clip or a dedicated Keurig cleaning tool to gently clear any blockages from the two holes in the top entrance needle and the single exit needle at the bottom of the pod holder.
  4. Wipe the Exterior: Use a damp cloth to wipe down the outside of the machine, including the buttons and display. Dry with a clean, soft cloth.

Part 2: Descaling (Every 3-6 Months)

This is the most critical part of cleaning your Keurig to remove mineral scale. The frequency of descaling depends on how often you use your machine and the hardness of your water.

  1. Prepare the Solution: You can use a dedicated Keurig Descaling Solution or a homemade alternative. A common and effective solution is a mix of equal parts white vinegar and water.
  2. Run the Descaling Cycle:
    • Fill the water reservoir with your descaling solution. If your model has a water filter, remove it before starting.
    • Place a large ceramic mug on the drip tray.
    • Without inserting a K-Cup pod, run a brew cycle using the largest cup size setting.
    • Pour the hot liquid from the mug into the sink.
    • Repeat this process until the reservoir is completely empty.
  3. Allow It to Rest: Once the reservoir is empty, turn off the machine and let it sit for at least 30 minutes. This allows the solution to work its magic inside the machine’s internal components.
  4. Rinse with Fresh Water: After the rest period, remove and thoroughly rinse the water reservoir. Fill it with fresh, clean water.
  5. Run Rinsing Brews: Place a clean mug on the drip tray and run multiple brew cycles with just water. It is recommended to run at least 12 rinsing cycles to ensure all traces of the descaling solution (especially the vinegar taste) are gone. Refill the reservoir with fresh water as needed.

Important Tips

  • Change the Water Filter: If your model has a water filter, replace it every 2-3 months. A fresh filter helps reduce mineral buildup and improves the taste of your coffee.
  • Run a Cleansing Brew: After brewing flavored coffee or hot cocoa, run a brew cycle with just water to rinse the internal components and prevent flavor transfer.
  • Avoid Submerging the Machine: Never submerge the main body of the Keurig in water. This can damage the electrical components.
  • Keurig’s Specific Instructions: Always refer to your specific Keurig model’s user manual, as descaling instructions can vary slightly between models. Some newer models have a dedicated “Descale Mode” that simplifies the process.

By following these simple cleaning and descaling steps, you can keep your Keurig running smoothly, brewing delicious coffee, and extend its lifespan.
